Nipigon is a small township in north western Ontario and sits close to Lake Superior.
Although we were in Ontario yesterday we remained in Central time, however today we are now in Eastern time which has further increased the jet lag.
Today started with a very pleasant drive along highway 11 which is the peanut butter and jelly filing to the Ontario/Minnesota sandwich. Lakes and rocky outcrops were the order of the day and while the drive was slower the lack of traffic made it worthwhile.
The scenic drive took us into Thunder Bay although we skirted by using the bypass and didn't actually go into Thunder Bay.
We visited a viewing area which included a monument celebrating the spirit, effort and achievmement of Terry Fox. Although Terry is well know in BC (his home and destination for his superhuman effort) it was very near to the monument that he succumbed to his illness and had to terminate his plan to walk to the west coast.
After we left the monument we drove past the mile marker now marked with a sign.
We had planned to visit Sleeping Giant provincial park and thought we had a hike planned out. However the website was misleading and the hike to the actual viewpoint required a significant hike before. We were quite disappointed in both the website and the actual park especially the poor signage and lack of information.
I guess we've been spoilt by National parks which have staff to advise and assist (and are actually cheaper than this park).
We continued to Nipigon, checked into our hotel and then went to recce the area.
Perhaps a shorter day isn't such a bad idea as tomorrow is our longest driving day of the whole trip.
It's all downhill from here
